The death toll has risen to 15 after heavy rains forced mud and debris through Montecito, near Santa Barbara, downing power lines, destroying homes and closing Highway 101 indefinitely.

With steady rain over the past few days, a tree in the 2200 block of American Avenue couldn’t stand any longer and came down on a Honda just outside the owner’s house The tree, which was also on his property, took down an AT&T phone line when it fell. City crews cleaned up the mess.

Security camera footage captured the moment of a gas-main explosion in the early hours of January 9 in Montecito, California, as the region battled flooding and mud flow. Santa Barbara County fire spokesman Mike Eliason said that a gas main break earlier in the morning started a fire. He also said there were reports of missing people.
The rain was pouring down Monday, Jan. 8 in Sacramento’s Fremont Park as California’s first big storm of the year brought substantial rain.
Frostbite can occur on exposed body parts in extreme cold. The colder the temperatures or the stronger the wind, the faster frostbite will occur, according to the National Weather Service.
These cold, dense blobs of air can block precipitation from reaching land, leading to unseasonable dry spells in places like California.
