BALTIMORE (AP) — A jury has awarded more than $37 million in damages to the family of a Maryland woman shot and killed in her apartment after a six-hour standoff with police.
News outlets reported that the Baltimore County jury took three hours to reach the verdict Friday.
Jurors heard nearly three weeks of testimony and arguments in a case brought by relatives of Korryn Gaines of Randallstown against the county and the officer who shot her in 2016. The lawsuit claimed police used excessive force.
The officer, Royce Ruby, took the stand during the trial. He testified that he saw Gaines raise the barrel of her shotgun into a firing position.
Jurors found that the civil rights of Gaines and her young son, Kodi, were violated. He was wounded by a bullet.
