A user in Vietnam has apparently received Android 8.0 Oreo update on their Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The update has been confirmed to be an original OTA update and has the firmware version of G935FXXU2ERB2, which brings the latest version of Android on the handset along with Samsung Experience 9.0. This is expected to be an accident from someone over at the Samsung’s development team. It is also quite possible that someone may have leaked the update on purpose. In any case, this build most probably was a developer build that was intended for internal use and might contain many bugs.
The exact stability of this update is not known as of now. The lucky user has posted a few screenshots of the Android 8.0 Oreo update in question. We can see that the update weighs in at 1.4GB. Samsung has not commented on the news of this accidental update as of yet. This story is quite surprising given that Samsung had started working on the Android 8.0 Oreo update for older models just recently, after the beta program for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ just ended. On top of that, the official Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Samsung Galaxy S8+ just started rolling out today in Germany, with the rest of the users around the world expected to receive the update within 24 hours.
Samsung is not known to release OS updates on older phones before new ones. However, this is not the first time something like this has happened. Just recently a user was able to get an OTA update of Android 8.0 Oreo installed on their Snapdragon-based Samsung Galaxy Note 8. That version of was highly unstable with bugs and glitches. Be that as it may, we are yet to see if this release will make Samsung roll out official updates for all Galaxy S7 Edge devices or still make us wait many more months as it is known to do.
