Last updated with our best look yet at Incredibles 2.
What we know: Tomb Raider stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft at the beginning of her tomb raiding days. Here she’s just a young woman off to follow the footsteps of her mysteriously disappeared father, which will lead her to, you guessed it, a tomb. Wonder what she’ll do once she gets there? Read the latest Tomb Raider movie news.
What we know: Giant robots meet giant monsters. Again. This sequel to Guillermo Del Toro’s masterpiece of monster mayhem comes from TV veteran Steven S. DeKnight, and stars John Boyega (of Star Wars fame) as the son of the first film’s Idris Elba character. The early trailers were all about character, but the latest is pretty much just all-out action.
What we know: This book adaptation from Disney is a trippy voyage through time and space led by none other than Oprah. Amazing. Director Ava DuVernay is best known for documentaries and big serious stuff like her Martin Luther King Jr. biopic Selma, so we can’t wait to see how she handles glossy, woke fantasy. Judging by the trailers, it looks like she’s got it under control.
What we know: Based on the best-selling novel by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One is a pop culture-soaked tribute to the ’80s. Set in 2045, it centres on a virtual reality contest with a fortune as the prize – and the answer is almost certainly hidden in its creator’s obsession with the music, films, TV, and most importantly videogames of the ’80s. Steven Spielberg is in the director’s chair, so hopefully it should be in safe hands. Early trailers were pure nostalgia, but the latest is a better look at the story – and the stakes. Find out more about Ready Player One.
What we know: The latest film from auteur director Wes Anderson sees him return to stop-motion animation for one of his strangest stories yet. Imagining a future where Japan is overrun by dogs, the excess canines are shipped off to an island rubbish dump, which one young boy journeys to on a quest to reclaim his own missing pooch. It’s all very, very Wes Anderson – make of that what you will.
What we know: John Krasinski (of The Office US fame) makes his directorial debut with this smart-looking horror in which an isolated family is hunted by… something… which tracks them by sound alone. Cue all sorts of complex efforts to stay silent and some serious panic when it goes wrong. After a teaser last year and a brief Super Bowl spot, we now have the first full trailer:
What we know: Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson stars in this retro video game adaptation, which pits him up against a giant gorilla, wolf, and crocodile. Not coincidentally, it’s from the director of San Andreas, which pitted him against an earthquake, so we’re hoping for similar levels of so-bad-it’s-good thrills. Oh, and of course the wolf flies.
Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Pratt… and so on
What we know: All of the superheroes ever are joining forces in the biggest Marvel movie yet, as Josh Brolin’s long-teased Thanos finally arrives to claim the six Infinity Stones and basically murder everybody. The cast is absolutely stupidly huge, but it all leads into the as-yet-untitled fourth Avengers movie in 2019, which will probably thin the herd a bit. Find out more and watch the new Super Bowl spot in our Infinity War news round-up.
What we know: Han Solo is back in this Star Wars prequel, which will follow him as he first meets Lando Calrissian and wins the Millennium Falcon. There’s an all-star cast, but beyond that we don’t know much – except that there’s been serious production trouble, including a late change of director. We got our first teaser during the Super Bowl, with a longer trailer just hours later, which you can watch right here. Read our Solo news round-up for the latest.
What we know: Ryan Reynolds is back as the Merc with a Mouth in the sequel to 2016’s surprise R-rated hit. The first two teasers focused on Deadpool’s dodgy heroics and Bob Ross-esque painting skills (?!?!) but we finally have a proper trailer for the film, focusing on Josh Brolin’s metal-armed soldier from the future, Cable. Of course, this is a Deadpool trailer, so things still aren’t quite so straightforward.
Get the latest Deadpool 2 news and rumours.
What we know: Jeff Goldblum is making his grand return to the Jurassic universe in the sequel to the massive hit Jurassic World. Once again, a host of unlucky characters have to somehow be persuaded back to an island full of deadly dinosaurs – this time to save the poor critters from going extinct all over again courtesy of an active volcano. Then, if the Super Bowl trailer below is anything to go by, they have to go back to the US to stop yet another genetically engineered hybrid dinosaur that has – believe it or not! – broken free.
What we know: Forget The Avengers – this year’s biggest superhero squad comes fully animated. 14 years on from their 2004 debut, Pixar’s The Incredibles are back in a long-awaited sequel. We haven’t seen much of the film yet, but our best look comes courtesy of the Winter Olympics for some reason or other, and it looks pretty incredible:
What we know: This is the all-female take on the classic Ocean’s heist franchise, with Sandra Bullock stepping into George Clooney’s shoes for another daring robbery – this time of a diamond necklace from the middle of the Met Ball. It could be hilarious, daring, and progressive – but on the other hand it does have a James Corden cameo, so we’re reserving our judgement for now.
What we know: Benicio Del Toro is back in this unexpected sequel to the hit drug war movie Sicario. Original director Denis Villeneuve isn’t back (he was busy with a little Blade Runner sequel) and neither is original star Emily Blunt, but Del Toro is stepping into the limelight for another grim ‘n’ gritty take on the cartel conflict along the US/Mexico border. Expect violence, moral grey areas, and probably more than a few jabs at Trump’s wall.
What we know: Scott Lang is back on the run after helping Captain America save the day in Civil War, but at least this time he’s got help: Hope is suiting up as the Wasp to bring us some tag team heroics – and the first (joint) lead role for a woman in a Marvel movie yet (at least until Captain Marvel arrives in 2019). Check out the first trailer right here:
What we know: What if Die Hard, but starring the Rock. And the building is three times as high. And the Rock is an amputee.
