Asymmetric multiplayer game Last Year: The Nightmare is set to make its official debut at PAX East 2018 next month, giving players a taste of its horror flair.
The asymmetric multiplayer horror game Last Year: The Nightmare is ready for its official public debut, and has marked April’s PAX East as the first place gamers can play the game. The event runs from April 5th to 8th, and will be the first step on the way to the game’s release this summer.
Originally just titled Last Year, Last Year: The Nightmare is a 5v1 asymmetric multiplayer game where players take control of one of five high schoolers or a deadly supernatural killer. If that sounds a lot like Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th: The Game that’s because there are a lot of similarities between the three. There is even a bit of Evolve thrown in for good measure, with each high schooler fitting a different class (medic, technician, etc.).
As the killer, players will have several options to choose from, but how many is unclear at this time. When the game was initially revealed, developer Elastic Games highlighted The Strangler and The Slasher, with the former offering a faster pace and the other functioning as more of a “heavy.”
Given the similarities between Last Year: The Nightmare and Friday the 13th/Dead by Daylight, there are bound to be horror fans instantly intrigued by the premise. But Last Year’s ultimate goal is to convince players why it is more than just a copycat of those other asymmetric multiplayer games with horror themes.
At a glance, Last Year: The Nightmare seems to be going for a class-based setup with its 5 high school characters. Each character will fulfill a certain role, and it is up to the killer to focus on the most helpful of those players and try to eliminate them first.
On the flip side, the killer has the unique advantage of appearing practically anywhere, which evokes that horror movie theme. Balancing him will presumably be a priority for Elastic Games, but thankfully there is time to get things right. Gamers’ first chance to see how the experience all works will be next month at PAX East 2018.
Last Year: The Nightmare is scheduled to release this summer for PC.
