Blizzard confirms the release date of Overwatch’s next event, but hints in an all-new teaser that the event may not be the King’s Row Uprising after all.
Blizzard is preparing for its next big in-game event for the competitive online multiplayer shooter Overwatch. Fans have been expecting news regarding the return of the King’s Row Uprising event for some time, and while Blizzard has delivered a handful of teasers so far an official announcement has remained absent. Today that changed, with Blizzard confirming the return of Uprising next month.
King’s Row Uprising will begin on April 10, according to a teaser post that Blizzard dropped on Overwatch‘s social media. That the event was revealed with such little fanfare makes clear that a larger reveal is still planned, likely to cover the event’s special game mode and any new lore that comes with it. The teaser post refers to the same in-lore event that occurred 7 years ago in King’s Row, when the Omnic terrorist group Null Sector started an uprising in London and Overwatch responded and ended the crisis.
However, the teaser has a secret hinting that this year’s Uprising event won’t just be a retread of last year’s. In the teaser post, which is an animated image, there is a moment where the text within the image changes. “File 00382 – King’s Row Uprising” appears to change to what fans believe says “File 00274 – Blackwatch Archives.” This idea being that the event is rebranding to Archives from Uprising, given that Uprising is now the name of an Overwatch League team.
Other details that come through during the teaser’s glitch include a date change from 7 years ago when the King’s Row Uprising took place to 8 years ago, as well as a change in the security clearance from “Confidential” to “Classified.” That is to say, the lore event that Blizzard plans to reveal for Overwatch‘s upcoming April 10 event is as yet unknown. Could this be the moment when Blackwatch turns on Overwatch? Or just another secret mission that lends insight into the modern state of the in-game world?
While not yet confirmed, a Blackwatch Archives or general Archives event certainly sounds like an exciting direction. Given that the history of Overwatch plays such a significant role in what’s happening in the current year, exploring past events through in-game action seems like a fun opportunity. With less than 2 weeks left until the start of the event, Overwatch players won’t have to wait long to find out exactly what Blizzard has in plan.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
