The Register, in partnership with Orange County Music and Dance and the Orange County Department of Education, is proud to announce the semifinalists for Artist of the Year in the categories of instrumental and vocal music.
Instrumental musicians were nominated by their teachers in the specialties of piano and strings, winds and percussion, jazz music, commercial music, and world/cultural music.
Vocal musicians were nominated by their teachers in the specialties of classical music, non-classical music, and commercial music.

The semi-finalists were chosen by a panel of music teachers from among 153 nominees – 72 in the vocal category and 81 in instrumental – based on applications, performance videos and artistic résumés.
During the final round the students are interviewed by a panel of distinguished artistic professionals and faculty members from Southern California universities as well as a few representative high school teachers.
Interviews include a live presentation by the students followed by a question-and answer-session. Finalists in each specialty will be name and one student from each of the seven disciplines – theater, dance, instrumental music, vocal music, film, 2D visual art and 3D visual art – will then be named a 2018 Artist of the Year.
Semifinalists for film, 2D visual arts, and 3D visual arts will be announced on April 8. Semifinalists for theater and dance will be announced on April 15
The Artists of the Year will be announced on April 22.
Support from the partners as well as Segerstrom Center for the Arts, the Angels Baseball Foundation, and Allied Medical will help to provide cash awards for the students and their schools’ arts programs.
