A dilapidated hotel collapsed in central India Saturday night after a car crashed into it, killing ten people and leaving as many as five more trapped beneath the rubble, according to reports.
The 25-room MS Hotel in the city of Indore came crashing down around 9:15 p.m. local time when the car slammed into a support pillar on its ground floor, reported The Times of India.
Ten people died, another six were injured, and up to five more may still be buried under the debris, officials said.
Rescuers — some using chainsaws and sledgehammers, others their bare hands — searched through the night for survivors.
“First, a portion of the right side of the hotel collapsed on an auto parts shop and an ATM,” a street vendor who witnessed the collapse told The Times of India. “Then, all hell broke loose. The whole thing came down.”
The decades-old hotel was already in a state of disrepair before the car slammed into the load-bearing pillar, reports said.
