NEW DELHI: Google IO 2018 is usually a conference where developers from around the globe gather to get a sneak peak at what the search giant has in store. However, this time the theme could be slightly different with the Sundar Pichai-led firm taking steps on lettings users manage their smartphone usage better than before.
According to a report from the Washington Post, says Google will be unveiling new Android Controls to manage the usage of smartphones, which comes as a part of a broader discussion of how much of tech matters in people’s lives. This comes from Google weeks after Apple was criticised by investors over people’s addiction to technology.
Google’s new Android Controls are said to help both families and individuals to take a look on how much time do they spend on their handsets and how they can manage it. It is worth adding that the search giant already has ‘Family Link’ to let parents take control of how much a particular device/app is being used.
For those unaware, Google dropped a few hints last month, talking about ‘responsibility’ in the Alphabet Founder’s letter days after revealing 2018 Q1 earning results. Penned by Sergey Brin, Google co-founder, it was mentioned that, “there are very legitimate and pertinent issues being raised, across the globe, about the implications and impacts of these advances. This is an important discussion to have. While I am optimistic about the potential to bring technology to bear on the greatest problems in the world, we are on a path that we must tread with deep responsibility, care, and humility.”
Google spotted testing new features ahead of Google IO 2018 conference
A couple of days ahead of Google IO 2018 developer’s conference, the search giant seems to be preparing to launch a ‘new’ address bar alongside some other upgrades. These new changes, as shared by Android Police, may get a proper unveiling at the upcoming conference.
The Washington Post report expects Google to announce some upgrades to Assistant AI and handing developers new tools to extract more reliable search results. You can also expect Google CEO Sundar Pichai talk on this theme at the keynote event.
The keynote event is
set to take place at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California. The live stream of the event can be seen from Google’s dedicated YouTube page starting 10.30PM IST today (May 8).
