Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC will be unveiling its latest flagship smartphone, the U12 Plus, at an event tomorrow. Before the big event tomorrow, specifications as well as pricing of the flagship smartphone has leaked online thanks to a mistake by the company. The HTC U12 Plus page went live briefly on the company’s website earlier today, although it was soon pulled down after the concerned team realized the blunder.
The HTC U12 Plus will be launched in China with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage at 5,888 yuan in China. Based on the current exchange rate, that converts to about Rs.62,800 approximately. On HTC’s European online store, the U12 Plus has been listed at 699 GBP (Rs.63,900 approx.). We expect the HTC U12 Plus to be priced similarly in the Indian market as well. HTC’s U11 Plus had been launched in India at Rs.56,990 earlier this year. The U12 Plus will take on rivals such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, Apple iPhone X, and Huawei P20 Pro.
As for the launch date, we expect HTC To launch the U12 Plus in India sometime next month. It is likely that the flagship smartphone will go on sale in HTC’s home market of Taiwan by the end of this month.
Unlike the vast majority of 2018 flagship Android smartphones announced so far, HTC’s flagship U12 Plus will not feature a notched display. The U12 Plus will feature a 6-inch Super LCD6 display with 1440 x 2880 Quad HD+ resolution. While we would have liked to see an OLED panel, it looks like HTC is in no hurry to switch to OLED for its flagship line. Powering the U12 Plus will be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 64-bit 10nm octa-core processor, just like almost every other Android flagship smartphone released this year. The version that showed up on the testing subdomain on HTC’s website includes 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. However, in some regions, the smartphone could be launched with 64GB of onboard storage. For further expansion, the U12 Plus will include a microSD card slot, although it isn’t clear if HTC will include a dedicated microSD card slot or opt for a Hybrid Dual-SIM configuration. The U12 Plus listing also revealed that the smartphone will be equipped with BoomSound speakers and come with an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. Fueling the internals of the HTC U12 Plus will be a 3500mAh capacity battery, smaller than the 3930mAh unit backing the HTC U11 Plus.
The complete specifications of the HTC U12 Plus were also revealed by smartphone leakster Evan Blass recently. According to the spec sheet shared by Blass, the U12 Plus will feature a 12MP + 16MP dual-camera setup at the back with UltraSpeed Autofocus 2 (phase detection + laser autofocus), 2x optical zoom, and optical image stabilization. For selfies, the U12 Plus will feature dual 8MP cameras on the front with Bokeh mode, Face unlock, Screen flash, AR stickers, and more. While the dual-camera setup on the back will be capable of 4K video recording at 60fps, the front camera will be able to capture Full HD videos at 30fps.
The HTC U12 Plus will be made official at an event to be held on May 23. At the time of writing, HTC hasn’t confirmed if a live stream will be available. However, going by previous launches, we do expect the Taiwanese manufacturer to live stream the U12 Plus launch event. HTC will be holding two MeetU events in the US. The first one will be held in San Francisco tomorrow, while the other one will be held in New York on May 30.
