PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds developer PUBG Corp admits that it has ‘fallen short’ of fans’ expectations, vowing to address cheating, performance issues, and more.
Since PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds left early access on PC in December 2017, developer PUBG Corp. has made an effort to roll out substantial updates to the game. This includes the upcoming island map, Sanhok. But players have been disappointed with the regularity of these releases and argue that not enough is being added to the game in a quick enough time.
In a post published to the game’s official website yesterday, the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds developer acknowledged these concerns from players, admitting that “Although we’ve made some meaningful improvements to PUBG, we’ve fallen short in other ways.” In the aim of being transparent, the developer highlights performance, cheating, and server-side optimization as the three key areas that it plans to focus on.
The developer notes that players have been complaining about frame-rate drops especially following the game’s most recent patches. While frame rate problems and stuttering are some of the biggest PUBG issues that players have faced in the past, it seems that they have recently become more prevalent. As a result, changes are being made to the way that it releases updates (updates will be released to live servers before major patches are ready) and a fix is coming for GPU overloading, which is one reason for the performance issues.
Regarding cheating, meanwhile, PUBG Corp notes that this is “the area where we’ve made the most progress in recent months” and points to “encryption based solutions” and massive banwaves as some of the things it is doing to combat cheaters and hackers. Moreover, the developer points toward the legal action it has taken out against some cheaters. In a prime example of this, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds made headlines when 15 cheat makers were arrested, facing potential combined fines of more than $5 million.
The developer has already taken significant steps to address the game’s rampant cheating program. Notably, the developer confirmed earlier this year that it had been unable to release new gameplay content as quickly as it would have liked because it was having to focus on fixing the cheating issue. The developer was also forced to roll back its huge anti-cheat update in March after players reported significant technical problems with the update, including crashes or an inability to launch.
It will be disappointing to some that these issues are still having to be looked at and that PUBG Corp. has not yet made the game completely stable and far less affected by hackers. However, many more will be glad that the developer is being a lot more clear about its efforts.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is available now on PC and on Xbox One through the Game Preview program.
