The Bergen County prosecutor’s office told CBS that Roosevelt Rene, 25, is the person who died at Jenkins’ residence in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, though it’s unclear how. His death is being treated as a homicide.
Officials said Rene was a family friend who had been living at the house. It’s unclear when he died.
“The manner of death will be determined by the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office after a post-mortem exam,” officials said.
Rene and Jenkins reportedly made rap music together, which the NFL player released under the name “Rabbit.”
According to NJ.com, Rene produced music under the name “Trypps Beatz.” Public records show that he has previously lived in Texas, Georgia, and Spring Valley, NY. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Fair Lawn Police Department are investigating his death.
Evidence markers could be seen inside Jenkins’ garage on Tuesday night as detectives gathered evidence in brown paper bags.
At one point, investigators were spotted searching a white Lexus sedan with Florida plates — which was sitting in the driveway — along with a Land Rover.
Jenkins has been in the Sunshine State since the end of Giants minicamp two weeks ago. The Pro Bowler has lived in New Jersey since getting traded to the team in 2016.
Before going to the NFL, Jenkins played at the University of Florida from 2008-10. He was forced to leave the school due to off-the-field issues, and was eventually drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2012 after finishing up his college career at North Alabama.
Jenkins played four seasons with the team before landing in New York. Records show that he bought the house in Fair Lawn upon his arrival for $500,000.
“He has always been a good neighbor,” explained one resident, who asked not to be named.
“They have lived here for two years with no problems,” another said. “It’s surprising.”
