More than 70 migrant kids who were separated from their parents at the border are being housed in New York state — at facilities in the Bronx, Long Island, and in Westchester and Ulster counties, Gov. Cuomo said Tuesday.
“We have about 10 facilities in this state. We haven’t spoken with all of them. We know there are over 70 children, just by the ones that we have talked about but they are in Dobbs Ferry, Lincolndale, Irvington, three in the Bronx, one in Syosset and one in Kingston,” Cuomo told reporters in a conference call Tuesday where he said he plans to sue the federal government over its treatment of the kids.
“Since the zero tolerance policy has been put in place, these children have been sent to these facilities under the federal government’s UAC program, unaccompanied alien child — except they’re not unaccompanied alien children. They were accompanied.”
The Trump administration’s new “zero tolerance” policy is to criminally prosecute every adult who crosses the border illegally — resulting in their kids being separated and put into government care.
There are eight boys and girls aged 6 to 12 being held in Syosett, Long Island, under the care of Catholic care agency MercyFirst, according to Newsday .
The children are from Central America, and are staying at one of MercyFirst’s group homes and attending school with the organization, its president told the newspaper.
They’re suffering from the separation, he said.
“Kids are very resilient but it doesn’t take much for a kid to start crying and miss his mom,” McCaffery told Newsday.
