The young soccer players rescued from a Thai cave after a death-defying 18-day ordeal weren’t able to watch Sunday’s World Cup final live because it was past their hospital bedtime, so they’ll catch a recorded version.
France beat Croatia 4-2 in the tournament final in Moscow that began at 6 p.m. local time, or 10 p.m. in Thailand, and ended two hours later.
Before the start of the game, an official at Chiang Rai Prachanukroh Hospital, where the boys are recuperating, said, “Given that the final will be broadcast quite late our time and we want the boys to rest and not to be looking at screens too much, we will probably record the final and show it to them later.”
FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, invited the boys and their coach to attend the final, but the kids couldn’t make it for medical reasons.
The “Wild Boar” team and their 25-year-old coach spent more than two weeks trapped inside the subterranean network of caves and were freed after a gripping multinational rescue effort .
They’ll get out of the hospital next week.
