A semi-truck in New Mexico blew a tire and swerved into oncoming traffic, hitting a Greyhound bus with 49 passengers and killing at least seven people on board Thursday, the second accident of this kind in New Mexico this summer.
The semi-trailer was split open with the front of the truck landing upside-down on Interstate 40, and the front of the Greyhound was shredded and torn from the rest of the vehicle like a “ripped open sardine can,” Rachel Cunningham, a passenger on the bus who was asleep when the crash happened, told CBS News. The Greyhound was heading to Phoenix from Albuquerque and had been on the road for at least two hours before the collision occurred, according to Fox News .
Preliminary crash information indicates a semi-tractor-trailer traveling on I-40 EB had a tire blowout and crossed into oncoming WB traffic, colliding with a Greyhound bus.

Passengers and onlookers helped first responders climb into the truck and lift other passengers out of the wreck and into ambulances that were too few to accommodate all of those impacted, CBS reported.
“I was literally carrying these people with the paramedics into ambulances,” Cunningham said.
It took crews eight hours to clear the wreckage from the highway Thursday and a team from the National Transportation Safety Board will be on the scene Friday to investigate.
