Vodafone has quietly introduced a Rs. 159 prepaid recharge plan for its subscribers. The plan closely mimics Airtel and challenges Jio’s Rs. 149 plan
Vodafone India, one of the leading telecom players in the country, has begun offering an interesting prepaid recharge plan at an attractive price of Rs. 159. The new plan from Vodafone is valid across all the 4G circles in which the telecom company is active and operational. Moreover, the plan is available for any and all prepaid subscribers of the company.
In an obvious attempt to challenge the steadily rising might of the latest telecom player in India, Vodafone has brought a new prepaid recharge plan to the open market. In other words, the newly introduced plan is not just for a select few “selected” or “preferred” customers. It is interesting to note that Vodafone has launched the plan without any fanfare or even an official announcement. But it is still possible that the telecom company may start promoting the same.
It is quite apparent that the Rs. 159 plan intends to challenge Reliance Jio. Strangely, Vodafone is not offering as good benefits as Jio’s Rs 149 plan. Still, it does match the data benefits extended by its rival company Airtel India. Let’s look at the features and benefits offered by Vodafone under the Rs. 159 prepaid recharge plan.

The Rs. 159 recharge plan is meant only for prepaid subscribers of Vodafone India. The telecom company has introduced it as an open market plan. The prepaid recharge plan is valid for 28 days from the date of recharge.
The plan appears to closely mimic the features and benefits of the plan that Airtel currently offers to customers at very similar pricing. As part of the plan, the telecom’s subscribers are entitled to unlimited voice calling. Incidentally, “Unlimited” comes with a cap of 250 minutes per day. Although there’s a restriction, the company is still allowing more than 4 hours of talk-time every day.
Apart from 250 minutes per day, subscribers can’t have more than 1,000 minutes, or little more than 16 hours, per week. Needless to mention, the weekly limit appears more restrictive than the daily limit. If that’s not enough, Vodafone doesn’t allow calling more than 100 unique numbers during the entire validity period. It is possible that telecom has to place the last restriction to prevent abuse of the plan, and misuse of the same for running telemarketing schemes.
Under the Rs. 159 prepaid recharge plan from Vodafone, subscribers can send approximately 100 SMSes per day. The limit varies as per circles. In some cases, subscribers are allowed 100 SMSes during the entire validity of the plan, while in other circles, Vodafone is not offering any SMS benefits at all.
Now to the most important and currently relevant benefit of the plan: Data benefits. Under the Rs. 159 prepaid recharge plan, Vodafone allows 1GB of high speed 4G data per day for the entire validity of the plan. In other words, subscribers have access to 28GB of data for 28 days.

It is obvious that Vodafone has introduced this prepaid plan to take on Jio’s Rs. 149 plan. However, there appear no extra benefits. The telecom has not specifically confirmed what happens after the daily 1GB quota is consumed. It is quite likely the telecom company allows unlimited browsing at highly restricted speeds. Needless to mention, any remaining data from the allowed 1GB expires each day.
Moreover, Jio’s Rs. 149 prepaid plan currently offers unlimited voice calls without any FUP limit, 100 SMS per day, and 1GB of 4G data per day for 28 days with unlimited browsing at reduced speeds.
