The National Weather Service is surveying the damage from yesterday’s storms. They have confirmed at least one tornado, and the damage surveying continues.
The tornado touched down in Frenchtown Township in Monroe County at 8:23 p.m. Tuesday, September 25.
The tornado is rated as an EF1 tornado with estimated peak winds between 95 mph and 100 mph. The tornado path was 4.3 miles long and was 1200 feet wide at its widest.
Fortunately there were no fatalities or injuries with the tornado.
A tornado warning was issued by the National Weather Service at White Lake, MI at 8:18 p.m., five minutes before the tornado touched down.
The NWS says the path began as weak EF0 damage, mainly to trees until Reinhardt and Heiss roads, where it began to strengthen. The tornado reached EF1 strength near Toben and South Stony Creek Roads, where roofing material was removed leaving exposed trusses. Windows and garage doors were also blown out of homes in the area. Many trees were damaged and uprooted in this area. EF0 damage to siding and trees was noted before the tornado dissipated near North Stoney Creek Road and the railroad tracks.
The EF scale is the Enhanced Fujita Scale, which classifies the strength of tornadoes.
As of 1:00 p.m., the NWS said the are now evaluating damage at a second damage area near Gilbraltar.
