John Gonzalez learns how to speak Gaelic at the Michigan Irish Music Festival. He interviews Scott Decker of the West Michigan Gaeltacht group.
MUSKEGON, MI — If you’re headed out to this weekend’s Michigan Irish Music Festival, you’re probably excited to see all the entertainment acts, enjoy the food, maybe sample some great beverages and take in all the sights and sounds.
But another aspect of the annual festival at Heritage Landing are the cultural aspects, such as history of Ireland, the wall of famous entertainment personalities and cultural dancers.
Oh, and don’t forget the cool merchandise.
One person who makes it his mission to keep the Gaelic Irish language in the forefront is Scott Decker, who says it is “definitely my commitment to keeping the Irish Culture alive.”
He even runs a popular Facebook group that hosts events throughout the year called the West Michigan Gaeltacht.
I met up with Scott at the Blarney Stage, where he is presenting “How to Speak Gaelic.”
It’s a presentation he makes fun and lively. You definitely want to check it out. Watch the video above for more details and to learn more about his Facebook group.
Decker has two more presentations this weekend:
How to Speak Gaelic
Blarney Stage
4:45 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15
4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16
Both presentations are free with admission into the festival.
In addition, Decker said his group s hosting an event at Unruly Brewing Company in Muskegon on Saturday night where musicians from the festival are encouraged to attend and “sing for their supper.”
