An avid jogger who just became engaged was stabbed to death while out on a run in Washington, DC — in an attack that police say was likely random, according to reports.
Wendy Karina Martinez, 35, was stabbed multiple times around 8 p.m. Tuesday while running in the Logan Circle area of the nation’s capital, according to WUSA9.
Her attacker fled — as a bloodied Martinez stumbled into a Chinese restaurant, begging for help. Graphic surveillance video shows Martinez bleeding from her neck as she tries to describe her attacker to horrified customers, according to Fox 5 DC.
She collapsed as customers, including a nurse, rushed to her aid. Martinez was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries.
A suspect has been arrested in her murder, sources told WTOP radio station. Police will announce details at a press conference Thursday morning.
Martinez had gotten engaged to Daniel Hincapie just last week and was excited to plan their wedding, her family said in a statement.
“We are deeply saddened by this senseless tragedy. Wendy Karina Martinez was the light of our lives,” the statement said. “Not only was she an avid runner, but she was a devout Christian, a wonderful friend, and a driven professional. Everything you hope that a daughter and a friend could be.”
Martinez, who lived close to where she was attacked, was the chief of staff of technology firm FiscalNote, based in DC.
DC Police Chief Peter Newsham said the stabbing was most likely random.
“This is one of those types of unsettling incidents that sometimes happen in large cities, but it seems like a singular incident,” he said.
