Three people have died after a fire broke out in Philippi East, Cape Town, Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Theo Layne has said.
Two women and one man died of smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning, Layne told News24 on Saturday.
Layne said firefighters responded to a call at around 06:00 informing them to respond to a blaze at a house in Ncede Street.
By the time they had arrived at the scene, the fire had been extinguished and three had died as a result of the fire, he said.
Layne said the fire has since been extinguished and the area cleared, while investigations continued into the cause of the blaze.
Police were also investigating the death of a 86-year-old man in a house fire in Centane in the Eastern Cape on Saturday.
The man’s house was seen ablaze at around 01:00 on Saturday morning, police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said.
It was unclear at this stage what had caused the fire, he added.
