WASHINGTON — A prominent congressional ally of President Trump said he’s exploring ways to investigate the anonymous Trump Administration official who wrote a scathing op-ed about the president.
Rep. Mark Meadows (R-S. C.) said he’s taking the nameless New York Times author “very seriously” and suggested the leak could threaten national security.
“Everybody is entitled to free speech,” Meadows, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, said Thursday. But this betrayal of trust is different because “you are having highly sensitive and classified meetings in the Oval Office and you are having someone trying to resist those efforts.”
House Speaker Paul Ryan panned the author of the op-ed earlier Thursday as “living in dishonesty” but he said didn’t see a role for Congress to investigate.
Meadows, who has a history of tussling with the speaker, said it’s no surprise that he disagrees with Ryan on the role Congress can play.
Meadows said he hopes to develop “concrete steps” in the coming days on what role the House could play in exposing the breach.
Meanwhile, Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-NY) called on the senior administration official to resign.
“If they want to go join the resistance, if they want to fight President Trump, they should not do it from a position where it is very important for us to have the best people,” Zeldin said.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) called the official inside the White House a “spy.”
Meadows expressed optimism the mole would be exposed .
“Nothing in this town stays secret forever,” he said.
