A woman died and a man is in custody after the crash Sunday, Sept. 2, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
WAVERLY TOWNSHIP, MI — A woman died and a man is in custody after a suspected drunken-driving crash Sunday night, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to a single-car crash at the intersection of 28th Avenue and 44th Street in Van Buren County’s Waverly Township at around 8:28 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, according to a news release.
An investigation by the Van Buren Sheriff’s Department determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol when the vehicle left the road and crashed into a ditch, the release stated.
The passenger, a 20-year-old Indiana woman, was found unconscious in the vehicle when authorities responded. The Bloomingdale Fire Department extracted the woman from the vehicle, and she was taken by helicopter to Bronson Methodist Hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Police believe the woman was not wearing a seat belt at he time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
The driver, a 21-year-old man from Detroit, was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing death and is lodged at the Van Buren County Jail.
