How did this weekend’s movies fare? Did the latest new release live up to the hype? Here are the weekend’s ten highest-grossing films. We’ll let you know which recent movies won big with both audiences and critics, and which features fell short of expectations in one way or another.
Michael Myers is the king of the Halloween box office for another weekend.
Horror sequel Halloween easily won the weekend box office for the second straight week, adding another $32 million domestically to its already impressive ticket sales. The film, which cost $10 million to make, has now earned $126.6 in US theaters and $172.2 million worldwide.
Michael Myers’ return to the big screen wasn’t the only holdover from last week, with all four of last weekend’s top four films finishing in the same spots this week. Once again, Halloween was followed by A Star is Born in second place, Venom coming in third, and then Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween in fourth place.
The only new release to crack the top ten movies of the weekend was the action-drama Hunter Killer, which underperformed expectations a bit, earning just $6.6 million for its opening weekend. The film, which stars Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman and follows a group of Navy SEALS tasked with rescuing the Russian president after he’s taken captive, was panned by professional critics but received an A- grade from audiences.
With just a few days to go in October, the continued success of Venom and Halloween has been a boon to the monthly box office — and made this month a record-setting one.
Three days before the end of the month, October 2018 now ranks as the highest-grossing October of all time in the box-office record books. Films have earned a combined $786.1 million this month, pushing this month past October 2014 — the previous record-holder, which accounted for $758 million in ticket sales — three days before the month has ended.
This upcoming weekend is likely to bring an end to the reign of Halloween and shake up the top ten rankings quite a bit, as there are a few high-profile films hitting theaters.
Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody is expected to win the weekend, but it could get some competition from the latest live-action Disney fairy tale, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Both films have been the focus of intense marketing campaigns over the last week or so, and although there’s a lot of buzz surrounding Rami Malek’s portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody at the moment, one should never underestimate the power of Disney.
Beyond those two films, this upcoming weekend also features the premiere of a pair of dramas earning some early awards buzz: The addiction drama Boy Erased and the war journalist biopic A Private War .
