We’ve hit the homestretch of the high school football season. Three weeks until the postseason, and then the playoffs will go another four weeks.
Buckle up.
Over the next few weeks, we’re going to see some big-time matchups as district leaders square off for the all-important automatic postseason bid. We’re also going to see some games that feature teams hunting for wildcard spots.
It’s going to be fun, in other words, and we’re going to try and pick the best of them. After a somewhat lackadaisical week of picking options we’ve got some BIG games on tap for Week 7.
We’ll see if we can follow up on a successful Week 6 — I went 4-1 and the readers went 3-2, bringing our overall records to 20-10 and 17-13, respectively. You can make your Week 7 predictions below:
Summary: This game is so intriguing. The Jaguars, owners of Class 4A’s best defense, will hit the road to play the high-flying Dodgers, owners of 4A’s second-best offense. Fort Dodge has shown they’re never out of any game, but Centennial will be its toughest opponent yet.
Summary: Another great matchup here in central Iowa. Indianola is a perfect 6-0, but outside a Week 3 win over Fort Dodge, the Indians have gone largely untested. That’ll change the next two weeks, with the tough-nosed Dragons and an explosive Waukee team on the docket.
Summary: The Saints have marched through the first six weeks of the season with the look of a team that may very well repeat as state champions. But Western Dubuque, another team that looks bound for the postseason, will provide a stiff test on both sides of the ball.
Summary: This game will be fun. PCM is averaging 44.2 points per game, good for third in 2A. Des Moines Christian is averaging 49.2 points per game — the Lions have scored 63 twice this season — good for first in 2A. Expect all the points in this clash.
Summary: This game may very well be the best of the five. Both of these Siouxland powers have title-winning potential through very different styles — West Sioux spreads out and scores in bunches, West Lyon plays a tough-nosed, overpowering style. This will be awesome.
