Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) said Sunday that Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court was a “sham” and “disgrace,” adding that it denied justice to every man and woman who is a survivor of sexual assault.
“Let’s speak the truth that it was a denial of justice for the women of this country and sexual assault survivors, men and women,” Harris, a Senate Judiciary Committee member and possible 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, said in a speech at the Ohio Democratic Party’s annual state dinner, according to Cleveland.com.
She added that “what we have been witnessing is a display and an exercise of raw power.”
“Power that is being exercised not just to win, but to demean, and deflate, and defeat. And we are better than this.”
Her comments came just a day after Kavanaugh was sworn as a Supreme Court justice following a 50-48 confirmation vote in the Senate. He faced multiple allegations of sexual misconduct during the contentious process, all of which he has denied.
In late September, Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding Ford’s claims that he sexually assaulted her at a high school party in the 1980s.
Harris said last month that she believed Ford’s allegations and she was among many Democrats to publicly criticize a FBI investigation that was launched after Kavanaugh and Ford testified.
“We were given one week to investigate. The Republicans said you’ll get one week, they threw out one week,” Harris told the Senate on Friday. “And in less than one week, we are presented with paltry documents.”
“Every American is entitled to the benefit of the doubt, but nobody is entitled to a seat on the United States Supreme Court,” she added.
In her speech on Sunday, Harris said that the “frustration” and “anger” from Kavanaugh’s confirmation should be used by voters to help Democrats retake control of Congress.
