According to files found in Red Dead Redemption 2’s official companion app, Rockstar could bring VR support to the open world western release at some point in the future.
Not too long ago, files found in the official companion app for Red Dead Redemption 2 suggested that the open world western’s forthcoming multiplayer component, Red Dead Online, would feature Adversary Modes and “seamless PvE”. Now, it looks as if even more information has come out of the aforementioned leak, as some file names that have been discovered are potentially pointing to Rockstar implementing VR support for RDR2 at some point.
For starters, the Red Dead Redemption 2 companion app has file names such as “PARAM_companionAutoConnectIpPC” that suggests a PC version is in the works, but there are also multiple files that include mentions of the word “Oculus”–a possible reference to the Rift headset. With this being the case, the companion app files in question could be pointing toward some kind of virtual reality functionality coming to RDR2 later on down the line.
For those unaware, save for a pared down version of L. A. Noire for HTC Vive, Rockstar has not supported VR within any of its other major releases thus far. So, with this being the case, the possibility of a virtual reality feature coming to Red Dead Redemption 2 would mark a significant moment in the developer’s history, and if it gets implemented, could further establish VR headsets in the mainstream.
Taking this all into consideration, with it being far too early to tell when or if Rockstar is actually considering adding VR for Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s best for fans of the open world western to hold their horses on the matter and simply hope for the best. Of course, with RDR2 already featuring a first-person perspective, there’s the possibility that the game in VR could work well, especially considering how slow-paced the gameplay can occasionally be. Nevertheless, we will simply have to wait and see if Rockstar brings VR to the table in the future.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
