President Trump said Saturday that a shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh that left multiple people dead appears to be an “anti-Semitic crime.”
“What happened today is a horrible, horrible thing,” Trump told reporters after stepping off Air Force One in Indianapolis, Ind., according to White House pool reports.
“It looks definitely like it’s an anti-Semitic crime. That is something you wouldn’t believe could still be going on,” Trump added.
Trump’s remarks came shortly after Vice President Pence similarly condemned the shooting while speaking in Las Vegas, saying, “There is no place in America for violence or anti-Semitism.”
The suspect in the synagogue shooting reportedly made an anti-Semitic remark before opening fire, shouting “all Jews must die” as he entered the building, local CBS affiliate KDKA reported.
Trump earlier Saturday called for the suspect, whom he described as a “madman,” to received the death penalty.
Local officials have not identified the suspect or described a motive, though he was identified in multiple media reports as 46-year-old Robert Bowers.
Trump was heading to Illinois on Saturday afternoon for a scheduled rally.
