Apple came under fire late last year for one of the controversies wherein it was found to quietly slow down iPhones with every update in order to maintain the battery performance. The firm later apologized, rolled out an update that let users chose whether or not to throttle the CPU and confirmed that the ‘feature’ at that time was limited to iPhones until the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Now, the handset maker has quietly upgraded the list and has added three new iPhones on its support page.
The list now includes last year’s iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X. This means that it will slow down these iPhones to deliver better battery life. The feature will be optional though and comes as a part of iOS 12.1, which rolled out yesterday.
Apple’s support page has been updated with few more lines, adding the names of these three devices. “Additionally, users can see if the performance management feature that dynamically manages maximum performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns is on and can choose to turn it off… This feature applies to iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. Starting with iOS 12.1, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X include this feature, but performance management may be less noticeable due to their more advanced hardware and software design,” states the support page.
Earlier, the page said “iPhone 8 and later use a more advanced hardware and software design that provides a more accurate estimation of both power needs and the battery’s power capability to maximize overall system performance. This allows a different performance management system that more precisely allows iOS to anticipate and avoid an unexpected shutdown. As a result, the impacts of performance management may be less noticeable on iPhone 8 and later. Over time, the rechargeable batteries in all iPhone models will diminish in their capacity and peak performance and will eventually need to be replaced.”
Apple had to give away EUR 5 million fine recently in an anti-trust case brought by Italy’s competition and market authority, the Autorita Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM).
It won’t be surprising to see this year’s iPhone XS, XS Max and XR in the list by the time 2019 iPhones see the light of the day.
