Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive officially declares that Red Dead Redemption 2’s sales have already outpaced the original’s total lifetime sales.
Prior to its launch, Red Dead Redemption 2 was easily one of the most highly awaited video games of 2018, and it looks as if the fans’ eager anticipation for the open world western release has translated into boffo sales. As a matter of fact, Rockstar Games‘ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has now officially declared that RDR2‘s sales have already outpaced the original game’s total lifetime figures after just a couple of weeks of being available.
According to Take-Two, Rockstar has now shipped more than 17 million copies of Red Dead Redemption 2, with the publisher also revealing that RDR2‘s first eight days on the market led to it selling more than RDR1 did within its first eight years of release. Of course, it’s also worth mentioning that these figures are sell-in numbers rather than sell-through, which means that the physical copies included in the 17 million total is in reference to units shipped to retailers instead of those purchased by customers.
Rockstar Games is certainly no stranger when it comes to having humongous sales figures attached to its projects, as its action-adventure game, Grand Theft Auto 5, is one of the industry’s biggest hits ever. As a matter of fact, GTA5 has become the most profitable entertainment product of all time, beating out every film ever made, including the likes of such massive commercial successes as Star Wars and Gone with the Wind.
All things considered, with this huge figure already under Red Dead Redemption 2‘s belt after such a short amount of time, it causes one to wonder just how much of a sales boost the game could get once Rockstar introduces its multiplayer component, Red Dead Online. The developer has promised fans that a beta will take place this month for the online mode, so perhaps we won’t have to wait too much longer to find out.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
