BOOM ISLAND PARK, Minn.—Supporters of Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar endured frigid temperatures to gather Sunday afternoon just outside downtown Minneapolis for her “big announcement”: that she is the latest to enter the increasingly crowded Democratic field for president.
Klobuchar, now serving her third term in the Senate, has hinted for weeks that she would be entering the race, officially doing so after an onslaught of reports that her “Minnesota nice” public image does not align with how she treats staff members behind closed doors.
Klobuchar stressed to backers through a steady stream of snowflakes—which obscured the Minneapolis skyline just across the Mississippi River that acted as a backdrop for the announcement—that she wanted to end the pettiness and gridlock in Washington. Klobuchar spoke of “community” and hailed herself as a bridge-builder who can get things done.
“But that sense of community is fracturing across our nation right now, worn down by the petty and vicious nature of our politics,” Klobuchar said. “We are all tired of the shutdowns and the putdowns, of the gridlock and the grandstanding. Today on this snowy island, we say enough is enough.
