Google’s idea of a folding smartphone consists of a dual folding mechanism. The dual fold design is intended to cleverly mask the gap between the bends.
2019 is the year of folding smartphones. Samsung and Huawei have already shown their ideas of a folding smartphone at the MWC 2019. Oppo also teased a prototype similar to the Huawei Mate X in photos while Xiaomi went a step ahead and showed off a prototype with a dual folding display. It seems like Xiaomi’s dual fold implementation has caught Google’s attention, leading the company to try a dual folding ‘modern computing device’ concept. The discovery was made by Patently Mobile via an officially filed patent.
So far, the patent only mentions a modern computing device and not a smartphone. Therefore, there are high chances that this patent could be just documenting Google’s idea of a folding device. Or, Google could be referring to folding smartphones as modern computing device due to the array of functionality that a folding phone brings with itself.
