Gone With the Wind is officially back on HBO Max just weeks after the platform removed the film, promising to return it with context. Today, the film has been restored on the streaming service, but now it comes with two educational videos for viewers to watch that HBO Max hopes will educate and inform audiences, Variety reports.
After HBO Max pulled Gone With the Wind from streaming June 10, they issued a statement condemning the “racist depictions” in the film. Now, TCM host and film scholar Jacqueline Stewart will provide context for viewers at home with one of the two videos HBO Max added today.
Stewart, who is a professor in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago and has written multiple books on Black cinema, will explain in her Gone With the Wind video “why this 1939 epic drama should be viewed in its original form, contextualized and discussed.
