U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai condemned the military coup in her announcement.
The U.S. will suspend all trade with Myanmar as the military continues to hold onto power and keep the democratically elected leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, detained, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai announced Monday. Myanmar’s military seized power in a Feb.1 coup after alleging “fraud” in the country’s last election won by civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The latest actions against the country’s military leaders comes after a violent weekend in which over 100 people were killed. Biden called the violence “terrible” and “totally unnecessary” and promised further action.
