Bass 'hopeful' on passing police reform legislation

Rep. Karen Bass on Sunday said she’s optimistic on the prospects of striking a bipartisan deal on police reform legislation that has passed the House but faces a high hurdle in the Senate. Bass, a California Democrat and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, said in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Republicans she’s working with on the issue, including Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, “are operating in good faith.” “I am hopeful, because the group of people where we have been having just informal discussions are very sincere, and it’s a bipartisan group,” Bass said. “And I believe that we want to make something happen.” Bass is the sponsor of police reform legislation that passed the House in March on a near-party-line vote. The House-passed bill is named for George Floyd, whose death in Minneapolis police custody last spring sparked national outrage over policy brutality and systemic racism.
