A trio of Republican lawmakers asked the acting State Department inspector general to open an investigation into John Kerry, the U.S. special envoy for climate change, over allegations he discussed Israeli military operations with Iran’s foreign minister when he served as then-President Obama’s secretary of state. Kerry is facing blowback after news outlets earlier this week reported on leaked audio that reportedly captured Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif saying Kerry informed him that Israel attacked Iran’s interests in Syria at least 200 times. The audio in question was recorded in March. Zarif reportedly expressed astonishment at Kerry’s alleged disclosure, though he did not reveal when Kerry said it. In a letter to the State Department’s acting inspector general, Diana Shaw, on Wednesday, GOP Reps. Ann Wagner (Mo.), Andy Barr (Ky.) and Lee Zeldin (N.Y.) asked for a full investigation into the claims.
