The iPhone 12 and 12 mini are purple now. That is, some of them are. Purple is a new optional color, to go with the existing black, blue, green, red, and white. We got some hands-on time with the purple iPhone, and we’re excited to show you what it looks like in real life. Colorful phones have a long history. Your phone is your most personal computer; it’s as much a statement of self, and a statement of fashion, as it is a communications tool. The Motorola Razr spawned blue, red, pink, and other colors starting in 2005. It was followed by the colorful LG Chocolate, a big hit of 2006. Another angle on that purple. Apple, too, has long understood that it’s selling fashion objects as much as it’s selling tech. The 1998 Bondi Blue iMac was a statement against the “beige boxes” that then ruled desktop computing; it was followed by orange, green, red, and other colors.
