Mario Gonzalez’s family says he was murdered by police; investigations are under way.
New footage released by the Alameda Police Department on Tuesday shows cops pinning a man to the ground for about five minutes before he becomes unresponsive. The man,26-year-old Mario Gonzalez, was later pronounced dead. Police released footage of the incident on Tuesday in the wake of criticism from Gonzalez’s family members, who say he was murdered by the officers. “Everything we saw in that video was unnecessary,” his brother, Gerardo, said in a news conference on Tuesday. “APD took a calm situation and made it fatal.” Gonzalez was standing in a park in Alameda, just south of Oakland, when police approached him on April 19 — just one day before Derek Chauvin was convicted of murdering George Floyd. Police say Gonzalez was a possible suspect in a theft nearby.
