Roger Federer won’t be on a tennis court anytime soon — and it’s possible he won’t play professionally ever again. Federer, who turned 40 Aug.8, announced Sunday in an Instagram video that he will undergo a third right knee surgery and will be “out many months.” Federer had two procedures in 2020 and did not play after the 2020 Australian Open until he made an appearance 14 months later at Doha. “I will need surgery so I decided to do it,” he said. “I’ll be on crutches for many weeks and then also out of the game for many months so it’s going to be difficult of course in some ways, but at the same time I know it’s the right thing to do because I want to be healthy, I want to be running around later as well. And I want to give myself a glimmer of hope to return to the tour in some shape or form.
