Alexander Zakovryashin was trying to save others but ended up needing rescuing himself.
After a methane explosion ripped through a Siberian coal mine, killing miners and suffocating rescuers,52 people were presumed dead. That number dropped to 51 on Friday as rescuers pulled Alexander Zakovryashin, still breathing, from the rubble. Zakovryashin had entered the mine attempting to save others but was soon in need of rescuing himself because of the poisonous gas. He was hospitalized with mild carbon monoxide poisoning. “I can consider it a miracle,” acting Emergency Minister Alexander Chupriyan said.
