Kerr was an assistant under Popovich when the Americans took home the gold in Tokyo.
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr will replace longtime San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich as the coach of the U.S. men’s basketball team beginning with the 2023 FIBA World Cup, ESPN reported Friday, following Team USA’s gold medal performance in the Tokyo Olympics earlier this year, in which Kerr was an assistant coach under Popovich. Kerr is considered one of the best coaches in the NBA, leading the Golden State Warriors to championships in 2015,2017 and 2018. Kerr brings experience managing superstar rosters, as he coached a team with two former MVPs in Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant for three seasons, shepherding them to three straight NBA Finals and back-to-back championships.
