Biden Promises Federal Abortion Protection If Democrats Make Midterm Gains

The president said Tuesday a bill enshrining abortion rights will be the first legislation he’ll send to Congress—but that relies on Democrats keeping control.
President Joe Biden announced Tuesday his main priority if Democrats expand their control of Congress in the November midterms will be to enact legislation that protects abortion rights, in an attempt to get voters re-focused on abortion and the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade as attention on the issue has faded.
“The final say [on abortion rights] does not rest in the court now, it does not rest with extremist Republicans in Congress … it rests with you,” Biden said Tuesday. “And if you do your part and vote, Democratic leaders in Congress, I promise you, will do our part, I’ll do my part.”
60%. That’s the percentage of U.S. adults who believed Congress should pass a law guaranteeing federal abortion rights, an Associated Press/NORC poll found in July.
How Democrats will actually fare in the midterms. While polling in the wake of the Supreme Court’s June 24 decision has largely suggested the court’s ruling will be a motivating factor to get Americans to the polls—as a majority disagree with the court’s decision—more recent surveys that have come out this week have shown Republicans having more of an edge as voters’ interest in abortion rights has faded.
