Kelly’s victory deals a major blow to GOP hopes of capturing the Senate, with Democrats now needing only one more seat to retain control.
Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona has defeated Donald Trump-backed Republican challenger Blake Masters, dealing a major blow to GOP hopes of capturing the Senate.
Masters’ defeat came after Arizona’s Maricopa County released another batch of votes on Friday night, which expanded Kelly’s lead and put a Republican comeback out of reach. Democratic Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kate Hobbs also expanded her lead, although Republican candidate Kari Lake could still pull out a victory because of the significant number of votes left to count.
In addition, CNN has projected that Republican Arizona secretary of state candidate Mark Finches, who was endorsed by Trump, will lose to Democrat Adrian Fontes.
