NBA Commissioner Criticizes Kyrie Irving For Not Offering ‘Unqualified Apology’ For Antisemitic Tweet

Irving said he “takes responsibility” for his tweet’s “negative impact”—but NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called the Nets star “reckless.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called Brooklyn Nets player Kyrie Irving “reckless” for promoting an antisemitic film on social media last week, and said he plans to meet with Irving soon and is disappointed he has not yet offered an “unqualified apology,” in Silver’s first public statement over an incident that has drawn massive outcry within the NBA.

On Wednesday, Irving, the Nets and the Anti-Defamation League released a joint statement in which Irving said he stands against hatred and oppression and “takes responsibility” for “the negative impact of my post towards the Jewish community,” —though he did not explicitly apologize.

Irving and the team each pledged to donate $500,000 to “causes and organizations that work to eradicate hate and intolerance in our communities.
