Everything, Everywhere: PR Lessons From The 2023 Oscars Best Picture

I urge my peers to take note of some of the most impactful themes from Everything Everywhere All At Once as we all navigate a changing media landscape.
After watching it, I agree that the movie was deserving of the best picture award. It was very strange, frantic and well, everything and everywhere—much like the always-changing world we live in today.
The movie, which takes us through a wild and ultimately heartfelt adventure through the multiverse with the Wang family, is chock-full of metaphors—many of which I think hold a connection to today’s public relations professionals and our partnerships with the media. I’ll come back to that in a minute.
This is nothing new to our brothers and sisters in the newsroom. They’ve been here before—during the 2000 dot-com bust, the 2008 recession, the Covid pandemic, etc.
So, what can we as PR professionals do to help our media friends who are still tasked with telling our clients’ stories? I urge my peers to take note of some of the most impactful themes from Everything Everywhere All At Once as we all navigate a changing media landscape.Be Kind And Thoughtful
In the movie, Waymond Wang says: “The only thing I do know is that we have to be kind. Please, be kind. Especially when we don’t know what’s going on.”
This quote not only speaks to me personally but is so important for those of us in public relations. PR can be a hard and demanding job, but so is journalism, especially when carrying the weight and responsibility of a slimmed-down newsroom.
Now more than ever, it is on us PR folks to provide the very best resources and story ideas that will help make a reporter’s life easier. But more than that, please remember that they are human, too.
