Prince Charles inherited the throne in September 2022 upon his mother Queen Elizabeth’s death at 96 — everything he’s said about becoming king
A new monarch. King Charles III succeeded the British throne in September 2022 upon the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.
“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” Buckingham Palace announced. “The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
Charles became the monarch of the U.K. and its commonwealth in fall 2022 but it wasn’t until May 6, 2023, that he was officially crowned king. His wife, Queen Camilla, went from Duchess Camilla to Queen Consort before receiving her newest moniker. (The late queen confirmed in February 2022 that Charles’ second wife would get the title when he took over.)
“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty the Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” he shared in a statement just hours after his mother’s passing.
