Matt Petgrave, a defenseman for the EIHL’s Sheffield Steelers, was involved in a play that ended the life of ex-NHLers Adam Johnson earlier this month.
Adam Johnson’s throat was cut by defenseman Matt Petgrave’s skate during an on-ice collision in a game between the Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers on Oct. 28, 2023.
English police made an arrest on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with the death of Johnson.
It has not been announced who was arrested in connection with Johnson’s death due to UK laws.
Petgrave, 31, was given a standing ovation by fans at the Steelers’ Nov. 12 game, though he did not play.

Matt Petgrave was born on Jan. 29, 1992 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
He has played hockey since he was a child, and played for the Toronto Titans U18 AAA team in 2008-2009 when he was 16.
He then moved to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where he played in 243 games over four seasons for the Niagara IceDogs, Owen Sound Attack and Oshawa Generals, posting 34 goals and 157 points.
In 2011, he attended a prospect camp with the Chicago Blackhawks, and then joined the Washington Capitals for one two years later.
