A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck China’s mountainous northwestern region just before midnight local time on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least 116 people and leaving hundreds more injured.Key Facts

On Tuesday morning, Chinese authorities said the earthquake’s epicenter was near the Jishishan county in the northwestern Gansu province, at a relatively shallow depth of 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at a 5.9 magnitude and referred to the area as “tectonically active.
