Republicans dealt major blow by Wisconsin judges

The Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned the state’s legislative maps in a win for Democrats.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Friday overturned Republican-drawn legislative maps in a 4-3 ruling and ordered new district boundary lines be drawn in what’s being called a victory for Democrats.
The lawsuit was brought by Democratic voters who argued that the GOP-made legislative maps were unconstitutional because districts weren’t contiguous. Wisconsin’s constitution states that legislative districts must “consist of contiguous territory,” but current districts include sections not connected.
The Associated Press wrote that the lawsuit was filed after Justice Janet Protasiewicz became part of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Protasiewicz’s spot on the court gave it a liberal majority.
“Because the current state legislative districts contain separate, detached territory and therefore violate the constitution’s contiguity requirements, we enjoin the Wisconsin Elections Commission from using the current legislative maps in future elections,” Justice Jill Karofsky wrote in the majority opinion.
