South Korea’s parliament on Tuesday voted to ban the production and sale of dog meat, a historic move that will end the centuries-old practice after years of controversy, debate and waning popularity.Key Facts

South Korea’s national assembly voted to pass a law banning the breeding, slaughter and sale of dogs for human consumption, as well as prohibiting the distribution and sale of dog meat.

The bill, which aims “to eradicate the consumption of dogs,” enjoyed rare bipartisan support in South Korea’s otherwise divided political landscape, passing with 208 votes in favor and 2 abstentions, according to Yonhap news agency.

Those breaking the law will face up to three years in prison or a fine of around $23,000.

The law will be enforced in 2027 after a three-year grace period but will reportedly outlaw the setting up of new dog farms, cooking and processing facilities and slaughterhouses immediately.

The bill does not specifically prohibit the eating of dog meat or stipulate penalties for doing so.
