A gymnast for Team USA was shockingly stripped of their medal almost a week after the event took place.
, was a career-defining moment for Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles. A member of Team USA for the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, Chiles finally won her first individual medal, bronze in Women’s Floor Exercise, after winning silver and gold in Team.
“This medal means everything to me”, Chiles said. “This is beyond words. I’m so proud of myself.”
Unfortunately, it wouldn’t last.
After Chiles’ routine was awarded a score of 13.666 by the judges, her coach challenged the decision because the correct difficulty score had not been entered. The judges agreed, increasing her score to 13.7, enough to earn the bronze medal.
This bumped Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu to fourth place, causing the Romanian Gymnastics Federation to appeal the judge’s decision. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) agreed on August 10, 2024, announcing that Chiles’ coach had challenged the decision four seconds past the minute deadline.
“The inquiry submitted on behalf of Ms Jordan Chiles in the Final of the women’s Floor exercise was raised after the conclusion of the one-minute deadline provided by article 8.
